Footwear

Hunting footwear from Harkila and Chiruca. This category holds Gore-Tex boots built for stalking through wet ground, driven hunts, long waits in the high seat and work with dogs. Waterproof, quiet and supportive footwear for Lithuanian forests, boggy meadows and rough logging tracks.

Footwear

Your feet are the first thing a hunt punishes: dew-soaked grass at dawn, boggy forest edges, wet snow on a driven hunt. Soaked boots end the day faster than any other gear mistake. In this category you will find hunting footwear with a Gore-Tex membrane that keeps your feet dry through a full day of wet forest and lets you step quietly over the last metres to the game.

Who this footwear is for

These boots are made for hunters who spend long hours outside in any weather: stalking over wet ground litter, waiting in a high seat until dusk, walking a driven-hunt line or following a dog through clear-cuts. They also suit anyone who works in the forest through autumn and winter on the same soaked trails.

Hunting boots differ from ordinary hiking boots in a few details: a quieter sole, calm earth-tone colours that do not stand out in cover, and a build that holds your ankle steady on tussocks, roots and ploughed field.

Boots available in this category

The current range holds two models: the Harkila Saxnas GTX Orange Mid and the Chiruca Boxer Boa Bandeleta 12 Gore-Tex. Both carry a Gore-Tex membrane, so both handle the wet season, but they differ in shaft height, closure and intended use.

Harkila Saxnas GTX Orange Mid

A mid-height boot from the Scandinavian hunting brand Harkila in a brown and orange colourway. The mid shaft leaves more freedom of movement for active hunting with a dog or longer stalks, while the orange details help beaters and other hunters on the line spot you during a driven hunt.

Chiruca Boxer Boa Bandeleta 12 Gore-Tex

A boot from the Spanish maker Chiruca with a Boa closure system and a Gore-Tex membrane. Chiruca specialises in mountain and hunting footwear, so this model is aimed at harder terrain: clear-cuts, slopes, stony forest track and long approaches with a loaded pack.

Gore-Tex membrane

Both models carry a Gore-Tex membrane that blocks water from the outside while letting vapour escape from the inside. In the field that means dry feet after wading through dew-heavy grass at first light and less sweat after a long walk in to the high seat.

Boa closure system

Instead of laces, the Chiruca model uses a Boa dial: you tighten the boot with one hand, even in gloves, and the pressure spreads evenly across the instep. In the dark before dawn that saves time, and a loose lace stops being a reason to make noise once you are settled in cover.

How to choose hunting boots

The best boots are the ones that match how you hunt, not the most expensive pair on the shelf. Sitting in a high seat, warmth matters most; active hunting with a dog calls for light weight and breathability; a driven hunt demands grip on churned-up lines. Work through these points before ordering:

  1. Name your most common type of hunt: sitting, stalking, driven hunts or dog work.
  2. Try boots on with the thick hunting socks you will wear in the cold season.
  3. Check the shaft height: a taller shaft keeps water out and supports the ankle, a lower one leaves freedom for a fast pace.
  4. Look at the sole: a deep tread holds on clay and wet leaves, a softer compound moves more quietly over dry twigs.
  5. Pick your closure: laces let you tune separate zones, a Boa dial tightens fast with one hand.

Caring for hunting footwear

Even the best footwear lasts only as long as its care allows. After every hunt, clean off the mud, because it pulls at the leather as it dries, and dry the boots slowly, away from the radiator. A membrane responds better to a dedicated care product than to heavy grease, which clogs the pores. Start wearing new boots a few weeks before the season opens, so the leather shapes to your foot before the first long day in the forest, and skip strong-smelling waterproofing sprays right before a hunt: the animal's nose picks them up before you ever see it.
