270

.270 WSM rifle cartridges for hunting. This category holds RWS and Norma loads with HIT, Vulkan and Tipstrike bullets, suited to deer and wild boar hunting from a high seat or on driven hunts, with the flat trajectory this short magnum is known for.

270

The .270 WSM (Winchester Short Magnum) is a short magnum rifle caliber built for fast, flat-shooting loads. Hunters pick it for deer and wild boar when shots cross open fields or clear-cuts and distances often pass one hundred meters. This category carries RWS and Norma cartridges covering different hunting situations.

Who the .270 WSM caliber suits

The .270 WSM suits hunting roe deer, fallow deer, red deer and wild boar. Its short magnum case pushes the bullet faster than the classic .270 Win., so the trajectory is flatter and drop at long range is smaller. That matters from a high seat over crops, where game steps out at 150 or 200 meters and there is no time for corrections.

The caliber is also a common pick for field and mountain hunts abroad, since wind and range-estimation errors affect it less than slower cartridges.

Cartridges in this category

This category offers .270 WSM cartridges from two makers: RWS with the lead-free HIT bullet and Norma with Vulkan and Tipstrike bullets. Bullet weights run from 8.4 g to 10.1 g, so you can match the load to the size of the game, your usual shot distance and the way you hunt.

RWS 270 WSM HIT 8.4 g

A lead-free deformation bullet that keeps nearly all its weight and penetrates deep. A sound choice where lead is restricted, and for hunters who want clean venison around the wound channel. The lighter bullet flies fast, so it works well for longer shots at deer.

Norma 270 WSM Vulkan 10.1 g

The heaviest bullet in the category. Vulkan expands quickly and dumps a lot of energy, so game often drops on the spot. Pick it for wild boar and driven hunts, where shots are at moderate range and stopping effect matters more than a flat trajectory.

Norma 270 WSM Tipstrike 9.1 g

A polymer-tipped bullet that pairs fast expansion with enough penetration. A versatile option: it handles a roe deer from the high seat and a boar on a driven hunt. If you want one cartridge for the whole season, start here.

How to choose a cartridge

Start by deciding which game you will hunt most and at what distance you usually shoot, then pick the bullet construction and weight. Confirm the final choice at the range, because every barrel groups different bullets its own way and catalogue numbers alone will not tell you that.

  1. Game size: a lighter bullet is enough for roe deer, choose 9.1 or 10.1 g for red deer and boar.
  2. Hunting style: fast-expanding bullets for driven hunts, flatter-shooting loads for long waits over open ground.
  3. Bullet construction: lead-free HIT, semi-jacketed Vulkan or polymer-tipped Tipstrike.
  4. Accuracy in your rifle: buy a box of each type and compare groups at 100 m.

Field advice

Zero your rifle with the same cartridge you will hunt with, and check the zero before every season. If you switch bullet weight or type, shoot the target again, because the point of impact can shift several centimeters and that is enough for a poor hit on game.

Magnum recoil is noticeable, so practice from the same position you shoot from in the field: off a high-seat rail or from shooting sticks. Store cartridges dry and transport them separately from the rifle, as the rules require.

About RWS and Norma

RWS is a German maker known for strict quality control and its line of lead-free hunting bullets. Norma from Sweden has loaded ammunition for over a hundred years, and its Vulkan and Tipstrike bullets are widely used on Scandinavian deer and boar hunts.
