This category holds Browning over-under and semi-automatic shotguns for hunting in field and forest, and for practice before the season opens. It covers the B525, B725, Cynergy and Maxus 2 lines - from a classic wood-stocked field gun to a composite semi-auto built for long days of waterfowl or driven hunting.
Who these shotguns are for
Browning over-unders suit a hunter who wants a reliable, accurate gun for grouse, duck, hare or wild boar on a driven hunt. The Maxus 2 semi-autos come into play when a fast second or third shot matters - waiting by a pond for birds, or on a drive when the animal changes direction. Both types run on 12-gauge shells with Invector+ or Invector DS interchangeable chokes.
Model types in the range
The category holds five main lines, each built for a different setting in the field or on the range.
B525 Game series
B525 Game, Game Tradition and Game Laminated are classic field over-unders with 71 or 76 cm barrels. They weigh less than the sporting models, so they stay comfortable to carry all day across a field or through a forest while a dog works ahead of you.
B525 and B725 Sporter line
The Sporter models (B525 Sporter, B525 Sporter G3, B725 Sporter, B725 Sporter Black Edition) come with an adjustable comb (ADJ) and longer, 76-81 cm barrels. They are built for practice before the season, when you need to train on moving targets, but hunters also carry them on driven hunts for the balance.
B725 Pro Sport and ProMaster
These carry a reinforced DS recoil system and suit heavy shooting - on the range or through a long driven hunt where you fire many shells in one day.
Cynergy Composite Black
Cynergy Composite uses a composite stock instead of wood, so it resists moisture and cold better. It holds up in rain or snow, conditions where a wooden stock would soak through fast.
Maxus 2 semi-autos
The Maxus 2 line (Camo MAX5, Black Gold Composite, Ultimate Composite, Wood Ultimate) is a semi-automatic shotgun with self-loading action. The Camo MAX5 version, with its concealment pattern, is built for waterfowl hunting where staying unseen matters. The composite and wood versions work well for general field and forest hunting.
How to choose the right model
Before you buy, weigh a few points against how you actually hunt:
- type of hunt - a lighter Game model suits driven hunts, a camo Maxus 2 suits waterfowl by the water
- barrel length - a shorter one (71 cm) handles better in dense forest, a longer one (76-81 cm) shoots more precisely in open ground
- stock material - wood for a classic look, composite for wet and cold weather
- shots per day - if you expect a lot of shooting, pick a DS-equipped model for lower felt recoil
- shooter build - an adjustable comb (ADJ) lets you fit the gun to your height and stance
Field advice
Before heading out, check the Invector+ or Invector DS choke you have fitted - the wrong choke cuts shot accuracy and can strain the barrel. A semi-auto action runs slower in cold weather, so test the gun on the range under similar conditions before a waterfowl hunt. On long days afield, a lighter Game model tires the shoulder less over hours of carrying, and a composite stock needs less care than wood after rain or snow.
B525 or B725 - which series fits you
The B525 is a lighter, simpler-built series for everyday hunting, while the B725 carries a strengthened locking mechanism and a lower receiver profile, so it handles more shots per day and suits heavier practice sessions. Both series run 12-gauge shells, so the choice comes down to how many days a season you spend afield and how many shots you fire per outing.
If you hunt a few times a month, mostly on driven hunts, a B525 Game or Game Tradition does the job without extra spending - light, dependable, accurate enough for grouse or duck at a sensible range. If you shoot more often, train before the season, or shoot sporting clays, the B725's reinforced lock pays off over time: the action wears less under a high shot count, and the lower receiver line cuts felt recoil to the shoulder across a long day on the range.
Caring for the gun after a day afield
Clean a wet or muddy Browning the same day you get home - moisture in the barrel or lock starts rust within hours, and in winter leftover damp can freeze and jam the action the next time you pull the trigger. This matters most after a long driven hunt through autumn or winter rain or snow, when the gun sits outside all day.
Wood stocks (B525 Game, Game Tradition, Sporter G3) need wiping down after rain and should dry at room temperature, never next to a radiator - fast drying can crack the wood. Composite stocks (Cynergy Composite, some Maxus 2 models) skip that step, which suits a hunter with little spare time after a long day. Clear shot residue from the barrels after every outing, and check the Invector+ or Invector DS choke threads from time to time so they do not seize before your next shoot.
Browning as a brand
Browning is one of the oldest firearms makers, known for precise mechanics and long-lasting over-under and semi-auto designs. The B525 and B725 series build on one another, while the Maxus 2 is a newer-generation semi-auto with a refined loading action for faster follow-up shots on a drive or over decoys.
