Barrel Protection

Most hunting in the Baltics happens in rain, snow or thaw. Your gun wades through wet meadows with you, stands in a high seat through drizzle and rides in the boot next to soaked boots. The barrel suffers most: water, snow or soil enters through the open muzzle, and rust spots appear on steel within a day. A barrel protector is the cheapest way to prevent this, which is why experienced hunters treat it as standard kit alongside a sling and a case.

Why your barrel needs protection

A barrel protector covers the muzzle or the full barrel and stops water, snow, sand and twigs from entering the bore. It also shields the outer surface from scratches when you carry the gun through thickets or load it into a vehicle. A blocked bore can burst on firing, so the cap protects you as much as the gun. The worst trouble comes on driven hunts, when you push through young spruce stands, and on winter sits, when snowflakes melt on the muzzle. Back home, you remove the cap, wipe the barrel with an oiled cloth and the gun is ready for the next outing.

Types of protection in this category

The category offers two approaches: rubber muzzle caps that cover only the barrel end, and leather or textile covers that wrap a larger section of the barrel. How to choose the right protector

The choice depends on your gun type and on where the protector will work: in the field during the hunt, or in transport and storage. Go through these steps:

1. Identify your gun type: shotgun, rifle or combination gun. Each has its own model.
2. Check the calibre. A GFT cap sized for 12 gauge will not grip a slimmer rifle muzzle.
3. Decide on material: rubber for field use and rain, leather for carrying and storage.
4. Consider coverage: muzzle only, or a longer section including the sight base.
5. Think about removal speed. On a driven hunt the cap must come off with one flick of the fingers.

Field advice

Fit the cap at the car, before you step into the forest, and take it off once you are on your stand or just before the shot. Always fire with the cap removed, even if the rubber looks thin. After the hunt, clean the protector and dry it away from the gun: moisture trapped under rubber or leather starts eating steel overnight. Treat a leather cover with leather balm now and then so it does not crack. Keep a spare rubber cap in your jacket pocket, because a cap dropped in the dark stays in the forest.
