Cold feet end more hunts than cold hands ever do. You can wear the warmest jacket available, but once your toes go numb after four motionless hours in the high seat, you climb down. Insoles are the cheapest upgrade for boots you already own: they insulate your sole from frozen ground, cushion every step on a stalk and support your foot on long drives through rough terrain.

Why hunting boots need separate insoles

Factory footbeds flatten within a season and lose their insulation, and cold reaches your foot through the sole, the one part in constant contact with snow, ice or wet ground. Replacing the footbed renews the boot at low cost. During stand hunting, when you sit or stand still for hours, blood flow in the feet slows down, so the layer under your sole decides how long you last on post.

A compressed foot freezes faster than a lightly dressed one, so lace winter boots a touch looser. After a wet day in the forest, take the insoles out and dry them separately from the boot, away from direct heat.
