Dummy rounds

Dummy rounds are a training aid with no powder and no bullet, made for a hunter who wants to check or adjust a rifle, carbine, or shotgun action at home, safely and without noise.

What a dummy round actually is

It is a case-shaped piece made of plastic or metal, sized exactly like a real cartridge of the same caliber, but with no powder and no primer. It lets you pull the trigger, cycle the bolt, or check magazine feed as if the gun were loaded, while staying completely safe.

Difference from a blank cartridge

A blank cartridge can be fired, it produces sound and a muzzle flash, so it is used for signaling or dog training. A dummy round is not meant to be fired, it sits in the chamber and shields the firing pin from wear when you dry-fire an empty gun.

Material and color

Most are made in red, orange, or yellow plastic with a metal-look tip, so a hunter can tell it apart from a live round at a glance in a gun safe or cartridge belt. Some models have a spring-loaded pin cushion, others are fully solid.

Where hunters put them to use

Before the season starts a hunter checks the gun after months of storage, and a dummy round lets you do that without risk and without waking the whole house. They are also useful when teaching a child or a new club member safe gun handling from the first lesson.

Checking a new firearm

After buying a new or used rifle, it is worth dry-firing it a few times with a dummy round in the chamber, to confirm the action cycles smoothly and does not bind before the first trip into the woods.

Silence in the high seat

A hunter waiting for hours in a high seat or ground blind sometimes needs to check that the gun is ready without a sound that could alert the animal. A dummy round lets you do this with zero noise.

Testing magazine feed

Loading a few dummies into the magazine lets you confirm that a new or freshly cleaned gun feeds cartridges into the barrel without a hitch, which matters most before a driven hunt, where every second counts.

How to pick the right caliber

Dummy rounds must match your firearm's caliber exactly, since a case that is too long or too short can disrupt the action or even damage it. Check the caliber marking stamped on your barrel before you order.

We do not stock this category yet, but the ammunition section has related products: pistol and revolver cartridges, blank cartridges, and air gun pellets. If you are looking for dummy rounds in a specific caliber, write to us and we will be glad to advise.
