Backpack Chair

A backpack chair combines gear carrying with a fold-out seat for still hunting: drop the pack, unfold it and sit wherever there is no high seat. This category holds Härkila, Chevalier, Blaser, Tatonka, AKAH and Huntera models from 20 to 35 litres.

Backpack Chair

Still hunting often happens where no high seat stands: at the edge of a clear-cut, beside a meadow rooted up by wild boar, at a crossing of game trails. Standing motionless for an hour or two is hard, and sitting on wet moss is worse. A backpack chair solves both problems with one piece of kit. You carry cartridges, a thermos, a knife and a drag rope as in any pack, and once you reach your spot you unfold a stable seat in seconds.

Why a hunter needs a backpack chair

A backpack chair is made for the hunter who waits for game away from a high seat: stalking, changing positions and sitting down wherever the tracks lead that evening. It replaces two separate items, a pack and a folding chair, so your hands stay free for the rifle and the total load on your shoulders drops.

In the field it earns its place in several situations. On a driven hunt, a hunter on the line gets a comfortable post for the whole drive. During the roebuck rut you can move a hundred metres in silence and sit steady again. On waterfowl hunts a dry seat lets you stay put from first light until noon. The same seat pack works at the shooting range and on a riverbank while fishing.

Models in this category

The category carries six models from established hunting gear makers: Härkila, Chevalier, Blaser, Tatonka, AKAH and Huntera. Capacities run from a compact 20 litres to a roomy 35 litres, and the colours cover green, olive and brown, so you can match the pack to your hunting style and the ground you hunt over.

Chevalier Chair Pack 35 l

The largest model in the category. Its 35 litres hold enough for a full day out: warm layers, food, binoculars and small gear all fit. The Forest green colour blends into a spruce background, so it also suits sitting in more open terrain.

Blaser Seating 32 l

A brown 32 litre model from one of Germany's best known hunting brands. Brown hides you well in autumn, when you sit against fallen leaves or ploughed fields and green would stand out.

Tatonka Frankonia 20 l

The most compact choice for mobile hunting. Twenty litres cover a short morning or evening sit, and the smaller build tires you less on a longer stalk. The olive colour stays quiet in woodland and meadow alike.

Härkila Metso

A backpack chair from Härkila, the Scandinavian hunting clothing maker, built for northern hunting in changeable weather. Hunters pick Härkila gear for durable fabric and well thought-out details.

AKAH and Huntera seat packs

The AKAH chair with backpack stands in the classic German hunting equipment tradition. The green Huntera model HKU101GR is a simpler option for a beginning hunter or as a spare set that lives in the car.

How to choose a backpack chair

Start by answering how long you sit and how much gear you carry. A short evening sit needs no more than 20 litres, while a full day on a driven hunt calls for 32 or 35 litres. Then weigh up these points:

  1. Capacity: mentally pack everything you take hunting and add room for the jacket you shed after the morning walk in.
  2. Colour: green and olive work for summer and late summer hunts, brown covers you better in late autumn.
  3. Seating comfort: the longer you sit, the more the seat width and stability on uneven ground matter.
  4. Carrying system: wide shoulder straps and a close-fitting back panel let you carry the pack for kilometres without fatigue.
  5. Weight: pick a lighter model for mobile stalking; for waiting in one spot the weight matters far less.

Field advice

The seat pays off most when you use it with some thought. Set it up before dusk, rock it gently and check that the legs neither sink into soft ground nor wobble. Keep your most needed items in the top pocket so you do not rustle zippers and dig through the whole pack after dark.

Sit with your back against thicket or a tree trunk so your outline never breaks the skyline. Choose your facing by the wind: your scent must drift away from the trail you expect game to use. After the hunt, wipe mud off the legs and let the fabric dry, and the folding mechanism will last for many seasons.

Brands

Six makers are present in this category. Härkila and Chevalier represent the Scandinavian hunting gear tradition, Blaser and AKAH are names from the German hunting world, Tatonka is known as a pack specialist, and Huntera offers plain, practical gear for everyday hunting. All six models are built for fieldwork, not the park, so the colours stay muted and the materials resist damp and branches.
