7x65
7x65R cartridges for break-action rifles, combination guns and drillings. The category holds Norma Oryx, Vulkan, Plastic Point and Tipstrike loads plus GECO Teilmantel, covering boar and deer hunting from driven hunts to long sits in the high seat.
The 7x65R is Wilhelm Brenneke's rimmed version of the 7x64, built for break-action guns. If you hunt with a combination gun, a drilling or a single-shot rifle, this calibre is familiar ground: the rim gives reliable extraction without a bolt. This category holds five factory loads with bullets from 10.4 g to 11 g, suited to game from roe deer to red stag.
Who the 7x65R is for
The 7x65R carries enough energy for wild boar, fallow deer and red deer out to 200 metres and beyond, with recoil you can manage through a full day of driven hunting. Its ballistics sit close to the 7x64, and the rim makes it the natural cartridge for break-action guns. On a drive a combination gun gives you a fast second shot from the smoothbore barrel, while the rifled barrel in 7x65R handles the longer chances. From a high seat the calibre shoots accurately across any normal field distance. The bullet range in this category lets you match the load to the game and the ground you hunt.
Bullet types in this category
The shelf holds four Norma loads and one GECO. The designs run from the fast-opening Vulkan to the bonded Oryx that drives deep through bone, so five cartridges cover driven hunts, stalking and long sits in the high seat. Each bullet has a clear job, and knowing the differences saves you a season of experiments.
Norma Oryx 11 g
The Oryx bonds its lead core to the jacket, so the bullet keeps most of its weight even through bone. Pick it for heavy boar and red deer on driven hunts, where shot angles are unpredictable and you need penetration from any position.
Norma Vulkan 11 g
The Vulkan has a folded jacket over a hollow cavity in the nose, so it opens fast and dumps energy in the first centimetres. Game drops close to the shot, which matters on a drive, where tracking a wounded boar through thick cover costs the whole line time.
Norma Plastic Point 11 g
A plastic tip protects the bullet nose and starts even, controlled expansion on impact. This is the everyday deer load for medium distances: enough penetration, predictable behaviour and a clean wound channel.
Norma Tipstrike 10.4 g
The Tipstrike polymer tip is designed for hard energy release, and the lighter 10.4 g bullet flies a flatter arc. It earns its place on driven boar, where moving game calls for strong stopping effect.
GECO Teilmantel 10.7 g
The Teilmantel is the classic European soft point, in use for decades. Its 10.7 g weight and simple, predictable expansion suit roe deer, fallow deer and medium boar at everyday hunting distances.
How to choose a 7x65R load
Choose by game, distance and the habits of your own gun. Break-action guns react to a change of load more than bolt rifles do, so make the decision before the season opens and stay with it until the season ends. This order of questions gets most hunters to the right cartridge:
- Name your main quarry: bonded Oryx for heavy boar and stag, Teilmantel or Plastic Point for roe and fallow deer.
- Think through your distances: Vulkan and Tipstrike work up close on drives, Plastic Point stretches to medium range from the seat.
- Test how your gun groups the exact load: drilling and combination barrels are regulated for one cartridge.
- Decide what you need more of: fast expansion and shock, or deep penetration through bone.
- Once a load shoots well, buy more of it and stop switching: point of impact shifts between makes.
Field advice
Check your point of impact before the season with the exact cartridge you will carry. The rifled barrel of a combination gun or drilling is often regulated for one load, and a change of bullet weight can move impact several centimetres at 100 metres. On a driven hunt you shoot fast and at odd angles, so a bullet that keeps its weight, such as the Oryx, forgives an imperfect placement. From the high seat you shoot calm and precise, so a faster-opening bullet aimed at the shoulder does clean work. Store cartridges dry at a stable temperature and take rounds from one lot to the hunt.
Norma and GECO
Norma is a Swedish ammunition maker whose Oryx, Vulkan and Tipstrike lines are standard picks in European big game hunting. GECO belongs to the German RWS group and is known for plain, dependable hunting loads, with the Teilmantel bullet a classic for decades. Both factories load consistently from lot to lot, so your point of impact stays predictable.
