Steyr Arms

Steyr Arms centerfire rifles for hunting and precision shooting - Austrian-made CL II, SM12 and Monobloc models with the S.B.S. bolt safety system. Calibers from 223 Rem to 300 WSM, barrels 508-635mm, built for stalking, driven hunts and the range.

Steyr Arms

Steyr Arms is an Austrian manufacturer whose centerfire rifles have been used in hunting and sport shooting for decades. This category holds CL II, SM12 and Monobloc rifles in different calibers and barrel lengths, from compact versions for thick woodland to longer-barreled models for a long shot across an open field.

Who these Steyr Arms rifles are for

Steyr Arms rifles suit a hunter who wants a dependable rifle for stalking from a high seat, for a driven hunt, or for an accurate shot at distance. They work for a beginner buying a first centerfire rifle and for an experienced shooter after a second gun in a specific caliber.

Sitting motionless in a high seat on a cold morning and then firing a clean shot in a few seconds needs a rifle that keeps its zero season after season and does not jam under cold, wet hands. The CL II and SM12 lines are built for that scenario, and the polymer inserts on the stock keep grip secure even in wet or frozen gloves.

Steyr rifle series and their use

The category holds four main series, which differ in stock shape, weight and intended use. Which one fits you depends on whether you hunt dense forest or shoot across open ground.

CL II SX Standart

A classic hunting stock with a standard barrel length, usually 508 or 558mm. This version comes in 308 Win, 30-06 and 9.3x62 - a general-purpose choice for medium and large game.

CL II Varmint

A heavier barrel for a more precise shot on smaller game or pest control. In this category it comes in 223 Rem, suited to fox or young wild boar at longer range.

SM12

A more modern stock geometry with an adjustable cheekpiece, comfortable when shooting with a scope. You find it in 308 Win, 30-06 and 300WSM, with barrels from 508 to 635mm.

Monobloc

A one-piece build aimed at strength and durability in heavier calibers - the category has it in 300WinMag and 30-06, built for a long and powerful shot.

How to choose caliber and barrel length

Caliber choice depends on the game you hunt most often and the range typical of your hunting ground. A few points to weigh when deciding.

  • For roe deer or wild boar under 100 metres, 223 Rem or 308 Win is often enough.
  • For moose, red deer or a long shot across a field, look at 30-06, 300WSM or 300WinMag.
  • A shorter 508mm barrel is easier to handle between trees and climbing into a high seat.
  • A longer 635mm barrel gives a higher muzzle velocity and a more precise shot in open ground.
  • If you plan to mount a suppressor, check the barrel has a threaded end, as marked on the M15x1 models.

Barrel length and its effect in the field

Barrel length directly affects how easily you handle the rifle in dense woodland or climbing into a tall high seat. A shorter barrel turns more easily among branches and trunks, while a longer one gives a steadier aim when shooting from a rest at distance across a field or along a crop edge.

On a driven hunt, where game appears suddenly and the shot is fired within seconds, a compact 508mm barrel is often handier than a 635mm one. Stalking from a high seat is the opposite case - the longer barrel helps you hold a calm, precise shot after a long wait.

Care and use in field conditions

Wet, cold weather is a daily reality for a hunter, so the bolt mechanism and barrel finish need to handle rain, dew and mud after dragging game out of the field. Clean the barrel after every hunt and check the bolt for trapped moisture - it extends the rifle's working life and keeps the zero true.

Check your zero against the scope before the season starts, especially if the rifle has sat unused for a while. The Steyr S.B.S. safety lets you move quickly from safe to ready when game appears without warning.

Why hunters choose Steyr Arms

Steyr Arms is one of the oldest Austrian gunmakers, and the models listed here span a wide range of calibers and barrel lengths, from the light CL II Varmint to the heavy Monobloc. That lets you pick a rifle for a specific style of hunting rather than settle for one general-purpose compromise.

If you hunt with more than one rifle, browse the other centerfire brands in this shop as well - Tikka, Blaser or Sig Sauer. If you are unsure which caliber or barrel length suits your style of hunting, write to us and we will help you choose.
